Why I Named My Company Atlas Business Partners
In Greek mythology, Atlas was a Titan condemned to hold up the heavens on his shoulders for eternity. Not as a reward. As a punishment.
I have always found that image striking because it captures something I have seen over and over again in my career. For many founders, operators, and CEOs, building and running a finance function feels exactly like that. Heavy. Relentless. And somehow always there, pressing down, no matter what else is going right in the business.
I get it. I also know that for me, this work has never felt that way.

Finance, structure, complexity, the kind of problems that send other people searching for two hires where one should do, this is where I naturally live. During my most recent full-time CFO role, a good friend and colleague said something to me that took introspection for me to understand. We were discussing a particularly difficult senior level finance role that had gotten the best of several excellent people. I was wondering why so many people were struggling with the volume of work I had done successfully while also doing other CFOO work for the company. She looked at me and said: people are not you and you are rare.
I was uncomfortable hearing it because compliments or recognition make me feel uneasy. But the longer I have been in this work, the more I understand what she meant. I know and accept that I am able to absorb a higher volume of work than normal.
